Rig Maintenance 101: Cleaning, Repasting, and Extending Hardware Life
Most rigs lose performance from heat long before parts actually fail. A consistent cleaning and repasting routine keeps temperatures down and delays the need for upgrades.
Removing Dust Before It Builds Up
Dust on fans and heatsinks blocks airflow fast. In a typical home setup with carpet and pets, you will see GPU temps climb 8 to 12 degrees after four to six months if you do nothing.
- Power off and unplug the system.
- Use compressed air on fans while holding the blades still so they do not spin and damage bearings.
- Vacuum the case filters and wipe the exterior vents with a microfiber cloth.
- Check the power supply intake every year; that fan often gets neglected and still pulls in lint.
Repasting at the Right Time
Factory thermal paste dries out after two to three years under load. You do not need to repaste every time you clean, but watch for rising idle or load temps on the same hardware.
Remove the cooler, clean both surfaces with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth, then apply a pea-sized dot of high-quality paste in the center. Reinstall the cooler with even pressure. Test with a stress tool for twenty minutes and log the new peak temperature.
Tracking Results After Each Session
Keep a simple log of temperatures before and after maintenance. A basic table works well.
| Component | Before Clean | After Clean + Repaste |
|---|---|---|
| GPU load | 82 C | 71 C |
| CPU load | 78 C | 69 C |
| Case exhaust | 48 C | 39 C |
If temps stay high after service, check fan curves or confirm the cooler made full contact.
Small Habits That Protect Hardware
Raise the case a few inches off the floor so it pulls less carpet dust. Replace intake filters every six months instead of waiting until they turn gray. Keep intake and exhaust paths clear of cables so air moves in a straight line. These steps alone often add two or three years before fans or thermal paste need attention again.
