Cooling Solutions for Mining Farms: Air vs Immersion

Mining rigs pull heavy power and throw off heat that quickly drives up failure rates if you ignore it. Air cooling still dominates most farms because it costs less upfront, while immersion cooling cuts energy waste and noise once you scale past a few dozen units.

Air Cooling Systems in Mining Farms

You set up rows of ASIC miners with intake fans pulling outside air across the boards and exhaust fans pushing hot air out through roof vents or ducts. In a 500-rig warehouse in Texas, operators run 20 large axial fans plus evaporative coolers during summer peaks to keep inlet air under 30 C.

Initial install stays simple: mount fans, add basic filters, and wire thermostats.
Power draw for fans and AC can reach 15 percent of total load when ambient hits 35 C.
Dust buildup forces filter changes every two weeks in dry climates, otherwise hash rates drop from thermal throttling.

Immersion Cooling Approaches

Miners sit fully submerged in dielectric fluid inside sealed tanks. A single 200 kW tank holds 40 S19 units and routes fluid through an external dry cooler. One Midwest farm switched 120 rigs last year and dropped their cooling power share from 18 percent to 4 percent.

Single-phase setups use pumps and plate heat exchangers. Two-phase versions let fluid boil at low temperature and condense on a lid coil, which removes even more heat per liter of fluid moved.

Side-by-Side Performance Check

Factor	Air Cooling	Immersion Cooling
Upfront cost per rig	$180-250	$650-900
Energy overhead	10-20 percent	3-6 percent
Maintenance interval	Weekly filter checks	Fluid test every 6 months
Noise at full load	75-85 dB	Under 50 dB
Max density	Low, needs wide aisles	High, tanks stack closer

Air works fine when electricity stays cheap and space is plentiful. Immersion pays off faster once power rates exceed $0.06 per kWh or when you need to pack more rigs into an existing building without new HVAC permits.

How to Choose the Most Profitable Cryptocurrency to Mine

Pick the coin that delivers the highest net return after your hardware and power costs. Start by listing your exact equipment and local electricity rate, then compare coins that your rig can actually hash.

Match Coins to Your Hardware

GPUs work best on memory-heavy algorithms like Ethash or KawPow. ASICs dominate SHA-256 coins. If you run two RTX 3070 cards, focus on coins such as Ravencoin or Ergo rather than Bitcoin. Running the wrong algorithm on your cards cuts output by half or more.

Calculate Power Costs First

Electricity usually eats 60 to 80 percent of mining revenue. Measure the wattage your rig pulls at the wall under load. At 0.10 dollars per kWh a 1200-watt rig costs 2.88 dollars per day. At 0.25 dollars per kWh the same rig costs 7.20 dollars. Subtract that number from projected daily coin value before you choose a target.

Check Network Difficulty and Block Rewards

Higher difficulty spreads the same reward across more miners, so daily payout drops.
Block rewards halve on schedule, which can turn yesterday’s profit into today’s loss.
Look at the last 30 days of difficulty charts on a site like WhatToMine or the coin’s own explorer.

Compare Coins Side by Side

Coin	Algorithm	Daily Revenue (3070 rig)	Power Cost at 0.12/kWh	Net Profit
Ravencoin	KawPow	3.40	2.10	1.30
Ergo	Autolykos2	3.10	2.05	1.05
Kaspa	kHeavyHash	4.80	2.20	2.60

Update the numbers every few days because prices and difficulty move fast.

Run a Seven-Day Test Before Scaling

Mine the top two coins from your table for 48 hours each.
Record actual coins received and wallet payouts.
Switch to the third coin for another 48 hours.
Keep the rig on the winner and set a calendar reminder to recheck in one week.

Small differences in pool fees or stale shares often decide which coin stays ahead once you see real results.

How to Build Your First Crypto Mining Rig on…

How to Build Your First Crypto Mining Rig on a Budget

You can put together a working crypto mining rig for under $800 if you buy used GPUs and skip new cases. Focus on proven cards like RX 580s or GTX 1660s that still hash well for coins such as Ethereum Classic or Ravencoin. The rest of the build is straightforward once you know which parts matter most.

Selecting Used Components That Still Perform

Start with a cheap B250 or B360 motherboard that supports four or more PCIe slots. Pair it with a used Ryzen 5 1600 or Intel i5-6500 and 8 GB of DDR4 RAM. These CPUs cost $40 to $60 on local marketplaces and handle mining software without issues.

The GPUs drive your income. Aim for four cards total. A single used RX 580 pulls about 28 MH/s and sells for $120 to $150. Check seller ratings and ask for hash rate screenshots before buying. Skip anything that has been heavily overclocked or run in dusty farm conditions.

Power supply: 1000 W 80+ Gold from a known brand, around $90 used
Risers: PCIe 1x to 16x kits, six-pin powered versions only
Storage: 120 GB SSD, enough for the OS and mining client

Putting the Hardware Together

Mount the motherboard on a wooden frame or open case so air flows freely across the GPUs.
Install the CPU, RAM, and SSD first, then boot to BIOS to enable PCIe 1x mode for all slots.
Connect the risers to the motherboard and attach each GPU one at a time, powering the risers from the PSU.
Wire the GPUs directly to the PSU with separate cables. Do not daisy-chain power connectors.

Test the rig at this stage with a simple stress tool before installing Windows or the mining software. Run it for two hours and watch temperatures. Cards should stay under 70 °C with case fans blowing across them.

Setting Up the Mining Software

Install Windows 10 or Hive OS on the SSD. Hive OS runs from a USB drive and makes remote monitoring easier. Create a wallet address on the coin’s official site, then download T-Rex or lolMiner depending on the algorithm.

Edit the config file with your wallet, pool URL, and worker name. Start the miner and check accepted shares in the first five minutes. If you see rejected shares above 1 percent, lower the GPU memory clock by 50 MHz and test again.

Tracking Daily Costs and Output

Power draw matters more than headline hash rate on a budget build. Measure the entire rig at the wall with a kill-a-watt meter. A four-card RX 580 setup usually pulls 650 to 700 W while mining.

Item	Example daily cost	Notes
Electricity at $0.12/kWh	$1.92	Based on 16 kWh
Expected ETC revenue	$2.80	Current network rate
Net after power	$0.88	Before pool fees

Log your actual numbers for the first week. Adjust fan curves if cards run hot, and replace any riser that causes instability. Small tweaks here often add $10 to $15 per month to your margin without buying new parts.

Security Tips for Protecting Your Mining Farm and Crypto Earnings

Your mining rigs pull steady payouts, which makes them a clear target. Focus on blocking the most common entry points before anything else.

Lock Down Physical Access to the Rigs

Most farm thefts happen because someone simply walked in. Place rigs in a room or shed that requires a key or code. Add a basic motion camera that sends alerts to your phone when it detects movement after hours.

Bolt rack frames to the floor so they cannot be wheeled out quickly.
Label power cables with your name and number in case equipment turns up at a local resale shop.
Store spare GPUs and PSUs in a separate locked cabinet away from the main floor.

Keep the Network Isolated

Never put mining machines on the same LAN as your home computers. Run them behind a dedicated router that blocks all inbound traffic except what the pool requires.

Connection Type	Risk Level	Recommended Action
Direct home router	High	Move to separate VLAN or router
Cloud dashboard open to internet	High	Restrict to VPN only
Local only with VPN for checks	Low	Keep this setup

Test the setup by scanning from outside your network. Close every port that does not need to stay open.

Protect Wallet Access and Payout Addresses

Route mining payouts to a wallet you control offline. Use a hardware wallet for any balance above one month of expected earnings. Never store seed phrases in cloud notes or on the same computer that manages the farm.

If a payout address gets swapped through malware, you lose the coins permanently. Verify the address on the wallet screen before each manual transfer.

Set Up Real-Time Alerts

Install simple monitoring on each rig so you know within minutes when hash rate drops or a machine goes offline. A sudden 30 percent drop often signals either hardware failure or someone tampering with settings.

Configure SMS or push notifications for hash rate and temperature thresholds.
Log every remote login attempt and flag any from unknown IPs.
Review logs once a week for patterns that repeat at odd hours.

Handle Updates on a Fixed Schedule

Apply firmware and mining software updates only after you test them on one spare rig. Outdated drivers have been used to inject coin-stealing code in several documented cases last year. Keep a written list of current versions so you can spot drift fast.

Reboot and check hash rate after every update. If performance changes without explanation, roll back and investigate before continuing.

Solar-Powered Mining: Is It Worth the Investment?

Solar-Powered Mining: Is It Worth the Investment?

Solar arrays now cut diesel use at remote mines by 30 to 40 percent in sunny regions. Operators in Chile’s Atacama and Western Australia’s Pilbara have already installed systems that pay for themselves in four to seven years when fuel prices stay above $1.10 per liter.

Whether the numbers work for your site depends on three variables: annual diesel spend, average solar irradiance, and how much battery storage you actually need for night loads. Run those figures first before you sign anything.

Cost Check for a 5 MW Installation

Item	Typical Cost (USD)	Notes
Panels and inverters	$4.2 million	Turnkey supply
Ground mounts and cabling	$1.1 million	Remote freight adds 15 percent
10 MWh battery	$2.8 million	Only if you run crushers at night
Annual diesel saved	$1.4 million	Based on 2.8 million liters at current prices

Skip batteries if your mill runs only during daylight hours; payback drops to roughly four years.
Expect 1.5 to 2 percent panel degradation per year in high-dust environments; budget for twice-yearly washing crews.
Grid tie-in is rarely worth it at isolated sites, so size the array to match daytime demand exactly.

One Pilbara copper mine added a 3 MW array in 2021. After 26 months the operator reported 2.1 million liters less diesel burned and no unplanned downtime from the solar side. The same mine now plans a second phase sized to cover 60 percent of its load.

If your operation sits under 2,000 kWh per square meter irradiance or burns less than 800,000 liters of diesel a year, the capital outlay usually fails to clear internal hurdle rates. Above those thresholds the case strengthens quickly once you model the avoided fuel and generator maintenance.

5 Common Mistakes New Miners Make and How to Avoid Them

New miners lose money when they skip basic checks on power and hardware before they start. Run the numbers on your local electricity rate first, then match the rig to what actually pays.

Power Costs and Hardware Buys

A 1,200-watt rig at 14 cents per kWh costs about $1,200 a year just to run. Many buy anyway and end up mining at a loss for months. Track your exact rate and divide expected daily revenue by that cost before you order parts.

Used GPUs often arrive with hidden fan wear or prior overheating. Plug them in, run a stress test at full load for six hours, and log temperatures. If any card hits 85C or fans sound off, return it.

Strategy and Daily Operations

Solo mining spreads your odds too thin. Switch to a pool with under 2 percent fees on day one so you receive steady payouts instead of waiting months for a block.
Storing wallet keys on the mining computer itself. Move coins to a hardware wallet after each payout and keep the mining rig offline from that wallet entirely.
Ignoring dust and heat buildup. Clean filters monthly and set software alerts for any card above 80C. One melted VRM from poor airflow can wipe out weeks of profit.
